The just ended just weekend was characterized by different thrilling events. In the premier edition of the Shell Ultra X Cup, Kaizer Chiefs submerged their bitter rivals from Pretoria, Mamelodi Sundowns. Over the years, there has been a hostile rivalry between the two sides as to who rules South African football. It never got better when the Tshwane side, with their recent successes, leapfrogged chiefs on league titles won, leaving the Soweto giants with only ‘the most decorated team’ statistic to brag about. At a packed FNB stadium also known as Soccer City or the ‘Calabash’, the Glamour Boys from Phefeni pushed the ‘Brazilians’ to the edge and it was former downs Khama Billiat and Leonardo Castro that did the damage, with the latter bagging a hat trick. Downs scored 2 consolation goals in the latter stages of the match that ended 4-2. Those who were stuck on Supersport 4 will bear witness of a thrilling match it was.
Somewhere to the west of Limbe, a soccer ball was being rolled also. The Malawi under-17 hosted their counterparts from South Africa nicknamed ‘Amajimbos’. It came to be not quite the result our comrades from the southern tip of the continent expected as their charges were outclassed 3-0 by the junior Flames. For reference, it may not be advisable to check highlights on Supersport Blitz. They seldom show highlights of matches bearing such a result.
Along the Chipembere Highway, something was going down also. It was the Blantyre Marathon. The eleven lines would like to commend the massive turnout of participants. The first aid personnel were also on point. Massive gratitude to the sponsors for making this initiative materialize and surely Kachere Rehabilitation Centre, the beneficiaries of this initiative can smile all the way.
The Malawi Polytechnic was not spared of the weekend ‘frenzy’. It was not the famous social weekend nor was it the Polytechnic Students’ Union elections. Then what was it? Some may query.
The Marketing profession once again witnessed a breakthrough. Students from different colleges in the country gathered at the college …of course many students at the establishment would bay for the eleven lines’ blood for referring to their ‘mighty Polytechnic’, as they call it to a college. They say it is not a college, it is ‘the Polytechnic’. Ok folks.
Heading into the afternoon of Saturday, it was evident that the students pursuing marketing had been inspired in all sorts. Mind blowing speeches from CIM Malawi President Golden Banda, Airtel Malawi Head of Marketing Masiye Mazaza and Michael Khomani, General Manager for CFAO Malawi remove all considerable doubt.
